1) According to Source 1, what was the “Main fleet to Singapore” strategy of the British in the face of threats from Japan? Explain clearly the importance of Singapore in this strategy.

Singapore is important for its naval base. I can infer that, “It would sail to Singapore to protect Britain’s Far East interests and possesions should they be threatened”. I know this because the war ships from Britain came to Singapore only when Singapore or Malaya was attacked. Thus, Singapore is the only place for protection for Singapore when there is a war in Singapore or Malaya occur.eatened.

Is the Sejarah Melayu fact or fiction?

January 15th, 2008 by Zafirah in Uncategorized · No Comments

Irayanti(3) & Zafirah(10)

The Sejarah Melayu was known as a famous literary work in History textbooks, however in the wikipedia.com, it was known as a historical Malay literary work that chronicles the establishment of the Malacca Sultanate and spans over 600 years of the Malay Peninsula’s history. It is unknown that the sejarah melayu to be a fact or fiction as both information from different sources explains different things. As an example, the story of Sang Nila Utama’s interesting account of the founding of Singapura had made us to ask ourselves if the part when he threw the crown into the sea and the violent storm broke out suddenly – were being exaggerated. Still, it’s a mystery for us to discover if Sang Nila Utama do exists during that time or just a creation. So, if we were to tell that the information is accurate or reliable, I guess the only solution is to corroborate and cross-referencing with peoples to compare both sources is the same or different.

Response On Rebecca Aldworth’s Journal-Nur Zafirah[10]

January 13th, 2008 by Zafirah in school work · No Comments

This documentary has more or less gave me the confidence to stand up for things that affects the living things living in this ‘mean’ world. Looking at the seals being clubbedby a human being as me, makes me feel sorry for all the seals living in this world. Eventhough i’m not the culprit who clubbed the seals, i felt guilty myself as i do have the ‘heart’ to think of the seals.

If i were in the humane group, i will definitelygo to the place where the hunters clubbed the seals, every year until they were sick of our presence and eventually stop clubbing the innocent seals. The seals will surely felt defenceless as they knew that the hunters will kill them or even their ‘family members’ without thinking of their precious lives.

This horrific incident should give a lesson to the merciless hunters. The seal pups were just beginning to shed their white coats and still nursing for their mothers, but unfortunately they were bludgeoned to death by the heartless hunters.

Changing my behaviour after getting my SA1 exam result

May 23rd, 2007 by Zafirah in school work · No Comments

After I  got my result slip, I was feeling very happy and excited because I passed all my subjects especially English! The subject that I had no confidence with. I thought that I would passed English Paper with a ‘ just passing’ mark but instead I passed with a grade B3. When I received the result slip from my teacher, I said to myself , “My behaviour should change from a girl with lack of confidence to a girl with more self-confidence.” I tried to be one and hope that for the next coming examinations, I will pass my English Language with flying  colours.

Research on YouTube

February 1st, 2007 by Zafirah in school work · 1 Comment

YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim, who were all early employees of PayPal. Prior to PayPal, Hurley studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Chen and Karim studied computer science together at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.The domain name “YouTube.com” was activated on February 15, 2005, and the website was developed over the following months. The creators offered the public a preview of the site in May 2005, and six months later, YouTube made its official debut.Like many technology start-ups, YouTube was started as an angel-funded enterprise in a small and inexpensive office or garage. In November of 2005, venture capital firm Sequoia Capital invested an initial $3.5 million additionally, Roelof Botha, partner of the firm and former CFO of PayPal, joined the YouTube board of directors. In April 2006, Sequoia put an additional $8 million into the company, which had experienced a boom of popularity and growth in just its first few months.During the summer of 2006, YouTube was one of the fastest-growing websites on the World Wide Web,and was ranked as the 5th most popular website on Alexa, far outpacing even MySpace’s growth.According to a July 16, 2006 survey, 100 million clips are viewed daily on YouTube, with an additional 65,000 new videos uploaded per 24 hours. The site has almost 20 million visitors each month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, where around 44% are female, 56% male, and the 12- to 17-year-old age group is dominant. YouTube’s pre-eminence in the online video market is staggering. According to the website Hitwise.com, YouTube commands up to 64% of the UK online video market. On October 9, 2006, it was announced that the company would be purchased by Google for US$1.65 billion in stock. The purchase agreement between Google and YouTube came after YouTube presented three agreements with media companies in an attempt to escape the threat of copyright-infringement lawsuits. YouTube will continue to operate independently, and the company’s 67 employees and its co-founders will continue working within the company. The deal to acquire YouTube closed on November 13. It is Google’s biggest purchase to date.Though YouTube had done its part to comply with NBC’s demands, the incident made the news, giving YouTube its most prominent publicity yet. As the site continued to grow, NBC began to realize the possibilities, and in June 2006 made an unusual move. The network had reconsidered its actions and was announcing a strategic partnership with YouTube. Under the terms of the partnership, an official NBC channel will be set up on YouTube, showcasing promotional clips for the series The Office. YouTube will also promote NBC’s videos throughout its site.CBS, which had previously also asked YouTube to remove several of its clips, followed suit in July 2006. In a statement indicative of how the traditional media industry’s perception of YouTube (and similar sites) has changed, Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports noted:In August of 2006, YouTube announced that, within 18 months, it hopes to offer every music video ever created, while still remaining free of charge. Warner Music Group and EMI have confirmed that they are among the companies in talks to implement this plan.In September Warner Music and YouTube signed a deal, in which YouTube will be allowed to host every music video Warner produced while sharing a portion of the advertisement income. Additionally, user-created videos on YouTube will be allowed to use Warner songs in their soundtracks.

Infomation from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube

YouTube is the most popular website where you can upload or watch videos. It is created by three youngsters  by the names of Chad Hurley,Steve Chan and Jawed Karim. It was first created in the year of 2005.I didn’t know that doing something for fun can lead us to success. We can also learn something from videos at YouTube, such as videos that helps us pronounce the words and also videos that helps us in our studies .For example,if we want to watch videos regarding science,we can just type on the search bar the topic we are searching for.

” The key thing is that the biggies are all coming from small groups of inviduals with bright ideas. For us to get our share, we need to be able to attract some people with some ideas and give them a launch pad to develop these ideas and plug into the global market. “

In my opinion,Mr Balakrishnan is trying to attract more youngsters like the three university students to develop bright ideas for a chance to plug into the global market. The government will give them money to start to develop their ideas and make the company gain more profits.:)

Three years later, after much recuperation and the loss of his right testicle, he won the Tour de France.

 In my own words:

Lance Armstrong didn’t give up on everything he do eventhough he is disabled.I truly admired his determination on doing something. He has show the undisabled people  not to be lazy when doing something and do the thing sincerely with a smile on their face. When we do things sincerely, our works will be something that we can be proud of.Don’t you think so?

I would like to add that being disabled is not easy as they can’t do things that other people do 100% right. So,we as the undisabled ones should do things that our parents, teachers or other people told us to do sincerely, correctlyand also the way they want us to do it.

With this,i would like to end my thoughts and opinions.

Online Gaming

February 1st, 2007 by Zafirah in school work · No Comments

I think online games is a waste of time if one doesn’t know how to
manage their time properly.I say so because i had experienced it myself.

When i was in primary two,my stepmother bought  a computer for me.After
getting the computer,i played with it for almost everyday after coming
back from school. Then, one day,she said that she won’t allowed me to use
the computer anymore if i kept playing the games in the computer.I just
ignore her warning as i had been addicted to the games i’ve been
playing which is called spiders something(sorry i forgot the next
word!).There was once she advised me nicely not to play the games too often
because my exams was just round the corner. But,as usual i will not listen to
her advised.

I realised her advised was right when i got my end of year results.I
failed my subjects badly especially my maths. After that my stepmother do
a roster for me to follow when i’m back from school. Now,i don’t need
any roster because my computer does not work suddenly last year!

But, if one can manage their time well, there will be no problems for
them.It is only that their parents must know what their child is doing
infront of the computer screen and don’t trust their child 100%
because, they might be daring when their parents is not around and go to the
websites that is illegal(etc;pornography).

Nowadays,i see most of the parents pampered on their childs and give
them anything that they ask for, especially those child who doesn’t have
any siblings.I would like to change the way parents in Singapore
behaved because, every child is the same.I say so because once the child is
influenced by their friends, they will do the same thing as what children
with siblings did.For example,if the child with siblings go to the
illegal websites, the child without siblings will also did the same thing
because, some of their friends will ask them to do what they do,in some
words, the child without siblings will depends everything to their friends
if their parents is not around.

With this, iwould like to end my comments and opinions and i
hope, parents will agree with me if they agree with my comments and opinions.Thank
You.:)

School of the Future

January 18th, 2007 by Zafirah in school work · No Comments

I think i prefer studying in such school because i don’t need to bring a heavy bag to school everyday. It will be very different from the other primary schools in Singapore as this new school is using tablet pc and not books.Yes, i totally agree with the (NS)Lui that learning with technology will be more effective because, using textbooks forever will not allow the students to understand things outside their classroom that is more important than what is in their textbooks.I found learning with technology exciting as i can learn more interesting things in the computer than using books to help me understand the things that i don’t really understand.
